New Editor-in-Chief for Population Studies sought

The Population Investigation Committee (PIC) seeks applications or expressions of interest for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of Population Studies: A Journal of Demography, which is owned by the PIC and published for them by the UK office of Taylor & Francis. The successful applicant would lead the team of eleven editors listed below, and succeed John Simons, the current EiC, who is retiring. The appointment will be made by the PIC after consulting the editors.

The PIC is a registered charity in the UK, which produces the Journal as part of its charitable purpose. The Journal was founded in 1947 by David Glass and was the first English-language journal concerned exclusively with demography.

Applicants are asked to submit a full CV plus a 2-page outline of their vision for the Journal under their leadership, with innovative ideas welcomed. A description of the work of the EiC and editorial office, which all responsibilities which a new EiC should expect to retain, can be requested from the editorial office at The statement accompanying the application should outline how the applicant would organise all the aspects of the role, including any additional assistance considered necessary if it is intended to delegate aspects of it. It should specify how much time the candidate will commit to editing the journal and how they plan to integrate the role with their other professional activities both organisationally and practically. Applicants must be completely fluent in English, but need not necessarily be resident in the UK. They will be expected to have a proven track record and some standing in the discipline. Previous editorial experience would be an advantage. It is anticipated that the Editorial Office would continue to be based in the UK.

An honorarium will be paid, based on a time commitment to be agreed. The appointment will be made for five years in the first instance.

All applications should be made electronically to the Editorial Office of the Journal at Enquiries and requests for further information may also be made to the Editorial Office at the same email address, or by telephone to (020) 7955 7666. Such requests would be passed on to editors or PIC officers as appropriate. Closing date for applications: 6 January 2016.
